Flora’s Flyer for 3 June 2016

Dear Parent/Carer
Welcome to our 102nd Flyer keeping you up to date and celebrating all the wonderful events and activities that make us unique here at Flora's. To see photographs of the learning and amazing events that take place, please also follow our Twitter feed @florasprimary where we have an amazing 702 followers!

If this sunny weather continues we should be all set for a lovely afternoon for our School Sports Day on Thursday 9th June at the Rugby Ground at Raeburn Place. We hope you can join us. We are aiming to start at 1.20pm. We would be delighted if you are able to volunteer to walk along the road to help supervise classes or help with the activities on the day. Please let us know if you can help. Thank you. You should have received a Parentmail about the Sports Day.

Never a dull moment at Flora’s! On Monday our P6 and P7 competitors in the City’s Interscholastic Event for schools over 250 pupils, were fantastic ambassadors for Flora’s. They showed an excellent team effort with Yasmin winning second place and Louis third place for their events. Wonderful!

We were very pleased to welcome our new Primary One pupils with their parents/carers this week for a taste of what will happen when they join our school. Great to see so many enthusiastic and excited children ready to continue their learning journey from nursery to school. Thank you to our present Primary Six pupils who are preparing to be supportive buddies for our new entrants in August.

It was great to see so many parents/carers at the Parent Council Meeting on Monday evening. All parents/carers are welcome to attend these meetings. We had fruitful discussions about a number of aspects of school life. These meetings have strengthened and extended the links between parents and staff and we are delighted with the input and the amazing support of the parent body. Thank you all and a special thank you to the committees. The Playground Committee and Fundraising Committees, in particular, have enhanced the provision at Flora’s immensely. Thank you.

The planning and organisation for Flora’s International Summer Fair on Saturday 11th June from 2pm to 4pm, is well underway. Please keep sending in your donations. The home baking stall is always a huge hit and donations may be sent to school on Friday or brought along on Saturday. We are delighted to have the pupils from the City of Edinburgh Music School playing for us and we will officially ‘open’ our wonderful playground and library at the International Summer Fair. Have you volunteered to have a stall representing your country or planned to send in a national dish/delicacy? Passports for children to visit our International stalls and collect stamps/stickers will be available from the Parent Council stall. We look forward to seeing you there.

An exciting week for Primary Five started with a great outing to the Traverse to see an amazing show called ‘Constellations.’ The show was part of the ImaginateUK Festival. They also spent time during the week preparing to share their learning with parents/carers at their Greek Museum on Friday. A tremendous amount of work and some truly wonderful artefacts on display by these very successful learners. Well done, indeed, Primary Five!

Primary Four have been thinking of ways to support others and are busily fundraising in a variety of ways for several charities. It’s great to see such responsible citizens.

Primary One, Primary Two and Primary Six children have shared their learning at our Friday assemblies recently and invited parents and carers to join us. We have been enthralled at the confident presentations, wonderful artwork and amazing singing and acting. Thank you all.

RBS organised a Young Enterprise Scotland Inventor Challenge and Primary Six rose to the occasion with their fabulous inventions. After working very hard in school with Rab Macdonald, several teams went along to the RBS Headquarters at Gogarburn to pitch their inventions. The audience were very impressed indeed as the teams presented their cookie phone, roll up TV, hologram TV and a super chip TV. Superb work, Primary Six! The previous week our Primary six representatives at the Games at the Hub Sports event at Forrester High School were also great ambassadors for the school, playing netball and returning with the Swimming Shield! There were 1500 pupils there from all over Edinburgh - a fantastic and fun-filled day!

Primary Seven had a demanding and thoughtful day at the Risk Factory. They were challenged to think quickly when presented with a number of very tricky situations. Would you, for example, return to the burning building to save Granny? A great day and very worthwhile advice to keep safe! Primary Seven also enjoyed a great day at SpartansFC trying out a variety of sports and a team building sports day at Broughton High with our Pirniehall Primary Sevens.

Our Netball Team continues to go from strength to strength. The Team secured third place at the P6 St George’s Netball Tournament. Our Team of P5 and P6 girls showed great spirit and sportsmanship. A superb achievement! Well done!

On Friday, three of our Modern Apprentices who trained at our nursery at various times over the last two years, graduated from the Edinburgh Early Learning and Childcare Academy. Many congratulations to Phoebe, Katie and Leanne and huge thanks to Mrs Wood for being their supportive and helpful mentor. Good Luck for the future.
