Flora’s Flyer for 11 March 2016

Dear Parent/Carer

Last Wednesday was International Women’s Day and we were delighted to participate in a day of technology and coding at RBS Gogarburn.  The aim of the event was to show our P7 girls the huge range of opportunities there are in the engineering and technology world of work.  All the girls loved the event and have been so enthusiastic about their experience.  See the school twitter feed for more details of the day.  We were also gifted two Raspberry Pi computers by RBS.  This brings us up to 12 in total.

As a result of the event we now have a girls specific programming group running alongside our existing coding group.  Each Friday morning twenty students work with Steven Clark and Jess Quinn to deliver coding lessons on either a Pi or iPad.  However there are currently 47 girls on the waiting list for Jess's group and a similar number interested in Steven's group.  Mr Baxter is looking into the possibility of running a Coding Club after school on a Monday afternoon / evening to enable more students to engage with coding.  If you would be interested in working with pupils at such a club please contact Mr Baxter. jonathan.baxter@florastevenson.edin.sch.uk

Every year, children from P6 and P7 take part in the Scottish Mathematics Challenge. This year was our best year ever, winning 3 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze. We are immensely proud of all pupils who entered. Well done to you all!

P5s participated enthusiastically in the Club Golf event organised by Robert Ure, our Active Schools’ Co-ordinator. P5 pupils from the four Cluster Primaries met together and had a great time.
They also enjoyed cricket sessions this week. Thank you to all who organised and helped.

The P7 Basketball Team displayed skill and sportsmanship at Meadowbank in the City finals. Congratulations! Very proud indeed!

Many congratulations to the P5/6 Football Team who achieved second place at the Fettes College Tournament. A super result!

The Girls’ Netball Team are going from strength to strength. They played in their first fun tournament and won lots of games. Very well done!

When they visited the Victorian Classroom based at Leith Walk Primary this week, P3 were VERY relieved to discover that there had been many advances in education since our school was built in 1899. They had a great time dressing in Victorian school uniform, participating in rote learning and finding out about discipline!

Playground Developments.
Thank you for voting for our Rainforest Hut in Tesco stores. We wait to hear the result with bated breath!
The Parent Council Playground Group continues to improve the outdoor spaces in our school. After the planters were installed last week, they arranged for a giant chalk board to be installed this week. Thank you very much. We will enjoy using it immensely. Our playtimes are now really exciting and fun. The sandpit will be ready to use after the Easter Break and the stage and quiet seating are in the pipeline! Look out too for a new ‘Buddy Bench.’

As always, we look forward to meeting you at our Parent/Teacher Consultations. You should have your appointment for Wednesday or Thursday. Please also pop into our Book Fair in the hall. Our new library will be ready for use after the Easter holiday and the proceeds from the Book Fair are used to replenish our book stock. Thank you.

Thank you also for all the books sent in for our Book Sale in aid of Book Aid International and to those who bought them. We raised a magnificent £370. Well done!

We are looking forward to the launch of our next Readathon at assembly on Friday 18th. We would be delighted if children could come to school dressed as their favourite character from a book. We are thrilled to have author Lari Don launch the event for us! Please look in school bags for further information from the Parent Council Fundraising Team.

Also on the 18th there are Bake Sales in the Nursery and School. Lots and lots of delicious treats to buy! It’s the turn of P5, P6 and P7 to do the baking. Proceeds from these events will go to enhancing provision in the nursery and for the playground.
The nursery children are having a ‘Wake Up, Shake Up’ on that day too. They are invited to attend nursery dressed in ‘sports clothes.’

The next Parent Council Meeting will be held on Monday 21st March at 7pm in the Music School. We look forward to seeing you then.

The Easter Holiday Break starts on Thursday 24th March. We finish at the end of a normal full-time day. 2.45pm for P1 and P2, 3.20pm for P3 to P7 and 3.30pm for the nursery classes. We hope you have a very enjoyable break and look forward to welcoming everyone back to school on Monday 11th April.

Thank you to Amelia L and Amelia S for playing the piano so beautifully at the super P7a assembly. We found out so much about French Fashion: great catwalk models and amazing French accents! Thank you to parents and carers who were able to attend. It was also a pleasure to welcome parents and carers to share the learning about the human body in our P6 classes.

It has been another very full and busy week in all classes at Flora’s. Please take a look at our Twitter feed @florasprimary to see lovely photographs and find out more about the learning and teaching at Flora’s.

We hope you have a very enjoyable weekend.

Best wishes

Irene Brennan
