Flora’s Flyer for Friday 3rd March 2017

Dear Parent/Carer

Book Week at Flora’s was such great fun! There’s no doubt that we love reading as the enthusiasm throughout the school was infectious! At this morning’s assembly, P7 invited us to ‘Tuck into a Book!’ We then had a wonderful reading hour. It was lovely to see children sharing books with children from other classes. World Book Day yesterday saw the school transformed as children dressed as a character from a book. At 9am, children from our P5 classes and Stockbridge Primary were enthralled by the author Lari Don as she launched the second book in her Spellcatcher series. We were delighted to welcome Jamie Hepburn, Minister for Employability and Skills on the day that the First Minister’s Reading Challenge was extended to include younger readers. P4 asked Mr Hepburn great questions about his reading habits and favourite books.

We have been focussing on the Flora’s value of Friendship this month. This is a value that is very evident daily at Flora’s and it was particularly difficult to single out just one child from each class. The following children received the awards:

P1 Rudi, Ellen, Felicity and Louis

P2 Isobel, Jaskeerat and Lucy

P3 Aidan, Cameron and Ben

P4 sugar, Poppy, Olivia and Kirsten

P5 Nabiha, Kai and Koko

P6 Carrie, Daisy and Shane

P7 Amy and Sam

Very well done, indeed!

I was delighted to present Head Teacher’s Awards this week to:

P1 Sophia, Euan, Lucia, Laila, Mischa, Ruairidh, Connor and Anja

P2 Sinan, Elodie, Amy, Dexter, Tanzeer and Emily

P3 Praval, Isobel and Abd Elsamad

P4 Zachary, Tristan and Gurjoth

P5 Amelia, Isaac and Angelina

P6 Finlay, Aaryan, Baxter and Alexander

P7 Abigail and Gabe

Many thanks to P7a for their fantastic assembly and to Andy for playing the piano so beautifully.

Other achievements this week included:

Our netball team who took part in the EPSSA P6 netball tournament. The organisers didn't want there to be an overall winner but our team played really well, winning all their games. They worked hard, encouraged and supported their team mates, and showed good sportsmanship towards the other teams. Very well done to Sara, Rebekah, Ava, Ebba, Emily, Eilidh, Idil and Flossie.

We had two teams playing in a Lothian Junior Chess tournament at Broughton High School last Sunday. The P6/7 team of Flossie, Pavel, Rocco and Kasey came 4th in their section in a very close competition. We also had a P5 & Under team playing, the first time in recent years that we've had two teams. Mahima, Marshall, Tristan, Dair, James and Athena all played, each managed to earn some points for the team and enjoyed the experience. Well done to you all!

Our cross-country runners had a great time competing last Monday in very slippery conditions. Well done to all our competitors from P6 and P7.

Date for your diary.

Our next round of Parent-Teacher Consultations is planned for Wednesday 29th March and Thursday 30th March. The appointment times will be the same as our consultations last October. If this doesn’t suit, please contact the class teacher for an alternative time.

Have a lovely weekend.

Best wishes

Irene Brennan
