The Flora's Flyer for week ending 15th January 2016

Dear Parent/Carer

Here we are at the end of the week already! Many thanks to Ms Mesquita and Ms Yarrow for planning such a super Health Week. Thank you to everyone who joined in with the morning ‘Wake-Up, Shake-Up.’ What a great, fun way to start the day and keep healthy! We are also very pleased with our new salad bar in the dining hall. Children will be able to help themselves to salad, vegetables and fruit at lunchtime.

P1 and P7 will have individual photographs taken on Tuesday by Tempest.

Look out for your class newsletter for this term. This will be sent by Parentmail.

Coats and Shoes

As winter continues the weather can often be quite unpredictable throughout the day. We try whenever possible to allow pupils out to play every day – even in light rain. Please ensure that your child comes to school each day with appropriate outdoor clothing – a warm jacket and jumper – and sturdy shoes.

On days where the weather is very wet in the morning, please remember that the front doors will open at 0840 for children in P2 to shelter in the Main Hall. The Dining Hall doors will open at 0840 for pupils in P3-7. P1 pupils will be let into their building at 0840 too.

This week’s Head Teacher Awards go to:

P1 Arianna, Ben, Krithick, Sameer, Lucy, Robbie, Ryan and Afra.

P2 Samuel, Amandine, Sophie, Amy and Ben.

P3 Robyn, Freddy and Elisa.

P4 Ella, Isaac, Joseph ad James.

P5 Karina, Rose and Summer.

P6 Brodie, Ella and Yousef.

P7 Sam, Amy and Keir

Thank you to Joelle, P7 for playing the piano so beautifully in assembly.

Wider Achievement

Lego League Challenge.
Pupils from P5 - P7 worked over the first term of the school year to design and build a robot from Lego Evo 3.  This involved putting the design together and then programming the robot through Lego Commander software.  Unfortunately we as a team were not able to attend the final stage of the process, a competition at Edinburgh University. However Chapman and Flossie attended the event with their families and completed two robot game challenges.  The team were awarded medals for coming 14th out of 18.

Exciting news! Yasmin and Milly in P7 have been accepted to swim in the Scottish Schools Swimming Competition (Yasmin 50 breast and Milly 50 fly), which is to be held at Tollcross International Swim Centre, Glasgow on 30th January. Joe Penman, ex pupil at Flora’s, has two swims also. Congratulations and Good Luck!
The SFA Performance School is run in partnership with the City of Edinburgh Council at Broughton High School.

This programme is aimed at talented boy and girl footballers who are currently in P7 entering S1 in August 2016. If your child is of an appropriate standard and would like to go forward for a first stage trial, then please click on the following link http://www.performance.scottishfa.co.uk which will take you to the Scottish FA website where you will find the on-line application process. An auto email is then generated upon completion of the application offering trial dates and times. For children who play for a school and/or recreational team the closing date is 31st January 2016 and for children who have already signed for a pro club the closing date is 14th February 2016.

The next Parent Council meeting is on Monday 25 January, 7pm to 9pm in the music school. If there are any items that people would like added to the agenda could they please email the PC directly at florastevensonpc@yahoo.co.uk.

Or there’s a comments box opposite the school office. The box is emptied every Monday by a member of the PC so make sure you have your say.
