Friday 22 November 2013

The Flora Stevenson Primary School Book Week starts on Monday 25 November. There are lots of exciting activities happening during the week from author visits to a whole school reading hour.
Our theme is Poetry with Music, and we have engaged Diana Hendry and Lynne Rickards to visit the school to deliver workshops to inspire pupils to write their own poems.
Our Music School pupils will be playing for us and the music teachers will be teaching the children how to add percussion to enhance the rhythm of their poetry.

• Thursday, 28th November, P7 will host a children’s Book Swap in the afternoon in
room 20. Please send in books you have finished reading, but are still in good condition and your child can swap them for something they haven’t read yet.

• Friday, 29th November, your child is invited to come to school dressed as a book
character or dressed to illustrate their poem. For this event, we ask your child to pay £1 to dress up and the proceeds will go to the charity, ‘Book Aid International’.

• Friday, 29th November, the whole school will participate in a Reading Hour where
older children will ‘buddy up’ with the younger ones for shared reading.

• Friday, 29th November, there will be an adult Book Swap in the main hall from
11.00 to 12.00. We hope many of you will be able to join us and find something
new and interesting to read.

Thank you to everyone for your fantastic contributions towards Children in Need and the fund to support the Philippines. We raised the amazing total of £716.89!

On Monday, Jason our School Cook came to speak our pupils at Citizenship Gathering.  He explained how the food is ordered and prepared for us.  He starts early every morning and cooks more than 300 meals every day.  Pupils were shown a presentation which showed them some key messages.   Salad and bread are available for pupils every day.  We always have water available for pupils to drink, as well as either milk or fruit juice.   He also spoke to the children about remembering their manners and keeping the lunch hall tidy.
We were pleased to see so many pupils taking bread, salad and water after his visit.  There was also a huge reduction in the amount of food wasted each day.
Please spend time selecting menu choices with your child at home to ensure that they choose something that they will eat.  This helps us to make sure that lunchtimes remain a happy and stress free time for our pupils.
We look forward to seeing you at our Drop-in Coffee Mornings.
·     Monday 25 November for parents/carers of children with an additional support need.

On Monday evening on the 25 November, parents/carers from our P6 classes are invited into school to find out about our Sex Education and Keeping Myself Safe Programmes.
Congratulations to former pupils of Flora’s who made an animation on looking after our environment. This short film was entered into the Hot Water film competition and has won first prize! Well done indeed!
