Dear Parent/Carer

Let’s hope we have lovely weather for our holiday weekend!

Our Parksmart Campaign is going well, many thanks to the Junior Road Safety Officers and Miss Cook for all their hard work. Look out for our banner on the fence next week.

This week’s Head Teacher Awards go to:

P1 Evan, Lana, Tomass, Izy, William, Saymeen, Jewel and Ethan

P2 Ryan, Aifa, Gabriel, Ben and Shito

P3 Simon and Orlando

P4 Wiktoria and Vincent

P5 Miku, Louie and Oliver

P6 Conall, Lydia and Jamie

P5b presented a fabulous assembly on natural disasters today and sang a beautiful song and played the ukulele incredibly well. Thank you and well done!

Huge thanks to Amelie for her wonderful piano recital at assembly today.

What have Flora’s pupils been up to outside school?

A report from the Chess Club coach, Jenny Wilson.

Thirteen pupils from Flora's took part in the UK Chess Challenge East of Scotland Megafinal on Sunday after qualifying via the tournament we had at school. This is more than double the previous record of entries for Flora's. There were over 200 children overall taking part, so it was a very large event. Everyone managed to score some points which is a great achievement especially for those playing in their first tournament and against a high standard of opposition.

The players were:

U7/8: Franek, Marshall and Chloe

U9: James B, Daksh and Iris

U10: Rocco, Mahima and Antoine

U11: Flossie, Pavel and Kasey

U12: Arnav

(the sections are determined by age at 31st August 2006)

Rocco, Flossie, Pavel and Arnav all qualified for the UK North Gigafinal which will be held in Manchester in July, again a record number for Flora's. Franek missed out on qualifying by just half a point and Kasey, James and Marshall by one point. Marshall received a medal for being the youngest player there. Pavel played one of the most gripping games of the tournament, successfully preventing his opponent from getting his pawn to the back rank where he could have replaced it with a queen which would have won the game, and thus holding him to a draw.

In addition to qualifying, Flossie retained her Suprema title by winning the U11 girls section.

A report on our footballers

P6 boys (Jamie, Lewis, Daniel, James, Lewis & Joe), played football for Spartans against Hamilton Accies 2007 last weekend at the New Douglas Park stadium. (Finlay usually plays but missed this match.) Two of them even scored goals in a match that had 5 Flora’s boys on the pitch at the same time as the team defence and midfield. (In boys’ club football, playing against these pro-youth teams is as close as they get to top level football.)

James and Conall are playing in the Scottish Primary Schools Badminton Championships in Perth this weekend. This year they’ve qualified for both the singles and doubles (together), and we are hoping they’ll do well, even though they are only P6. Good luck!

A reminder that school is closed on Monday 1st May and Thursday 4th May.

There may not be a crossing guide at the Orchard Brae traffic lights on Wednesday 3rd May in the afternoon.

Enjoy the long weekend.

Best wishes

Irene Brennan
