Flora’s Flyer for 24 March 2017

Dear Parent/Carer

As I sit down to write the weekly Flyer, I’m always thrilled to report on the fantastic activities that make Flora’s such a great place to be. This week’s activities include the launch of Flora’s Fitness Fortnight, P6/7 Cross Country runners participating in the EPSSA event, the Active Schools’ Gymnastics Showcase at Broughton High School, Red Nose Day, Outdoor Learning workshops, the finals of the Delancey UK Chess Challenge, a transition visit by Broughton High for our P7s and cricket, coding and ukulele workshops. Please have a look at our Twitter account @florasprimary to see photographs of all these activities and of our daily learning at Flora’s. Every class posts a tweet each week. We are absolutely delighted to have 952 followers.

Thank you to the Health and Wellbeing Flora’s Forum for planning our super Flora’s Fitness Fortnight. It was great to see everyone enjoying the daily mile challenge and supporting the Red Nose charity. Thank you to everyone for wearing red on Friday. The final total raised for Red Nose Day will be announced in next week’s Flyer.

Our P6 and P7 runners did us proud at the EPSSA Cross Country Challenge, well done!

Many thanks to P6 who manned the outdoor learning stalls, teaching us amazing activities to do with everyday items. The ‘gluck’ is my favourite although the lava lamps came a close second! Thank you Ms McGhee for organising such a great event!

Many thanks to Jenny Wilson and her helpers for organising and running the Delancey UK chess challenge over the last few months. After exciting final rounds in both sections, Rocco and Flossie were joint first winners in the P5-7 section and Iris and James in the P4 section. The P5 trophy went to Rocco, the P6 trophy to Flossie and the P7 trophy to Arnav. Huge congratulations to all participants who have developed their skills and should be extremely proud.

Ben and Lewis in P7 having been working hard as part of the Young Scot development team for the 2018 Year of Young People. They've been making some big decisions with other young people aged up to 25. Recently they have been to the National Museum to mark 100 days til the launch of the event and this week visited the Scottish Parliament to meet the Presiding Officer.

They are hoping to recruit many more young people aged 8 and above to participate as Ambassadors to the programme. If you would like more information you can visit the website at http://young.scot/yoyp2018/yoyp-articles/yoyp-2018-ambassador/

We are very proud of their achievements so far. Keep up the good work!

A final reminder that our Parent - Teacher Consultations will be held this Wednesday and Thursday. As always, we have organised our Book Fair for this week and would like to thank you in advance for your support. The proceeds from the Book Fair go toward new books for our library to encourage a love of reading.

Well done also to the following pupils who received Head Teacher’s Award over the last two weeks:

P1 Ellie, Hudson, Leo, Hayden, Martha, Francesco and Brodie

P2 Sameer, Marshall, Isaac, Licy, Sophia and Aarjan

P3 Archie, Roby and Oliver

P4 Cameron, Ula and Eliza

P5 Callan-Adam, Aliyah, Lillie and Mya

P6 Ciaran, Anisha and Paulie

P7 Edward and Freddie

Well done to you all! I am delighted to see so many children highlighting Flora’s values every day.

P7b amazed us all with their wonderful WW2 assembly, showcasing music, film making, singing and dancing as they shared their learning with the rest of the school and their parents and carers. Thank you!

Please check the Parent Council Website for the minutes of the last Parent Council Meeting held on Monday 20th March. Thank you to the Parent Council for all your support of the school. We are delighted with the special red sweatshirts for our children to wear to sports events and competitions. The children who participated so well in the recent cross country tournament looked great.

Best wishes

Irene Brennan
